Why Backstop Engineering Exists
Modern businesses depend on software — but too often, that software depends on only one person.
Backstop Engineering was founded to solve a growing and dangerous problem in today's AI-accelerated development world: single-developer dependency in business-critical systems.
When only one person understands how a system works, the business carries silent risk. Growth slows, audits become stressful, and leadership loses confidence that the company could survive unexpected change.
Backstop Engineering exists to make sure your software — and your business — can survive without being dependent on a single human being.
Our Philosophy
We believe:
- Continuity is an operational responsibility, not an afterthought
- Documentation is only valuable if it is accurate and validated
- Businesses deserve peace of mind, not just working code
- Software should increase resilience, not introduce fragility
Our role is not to replace your developers.
Our role is to make sure your business is never trapped by hidden technical risk.
Meet the Founder
Reid Wilson
Founder & Principal Engineer
Backstop Engineering was founded by Reid Wilson, a software engineer with over two decades of experience building and maintaining custom CRM and ERP systems for small and mid-sized businesses.
For more than 20 years, Reid has specialized in:
- Designing and evolving long-lived business systems
- Supporting revenue-critical operations
- Managing complex data and workflow pipelines
- Keeping systems stable while businesses scale
He has served as system architect and lead developer for several companies whose platforms were eventually involved in successful acquisitions, including multiple exits exceeding $20 million each.
In these environments, Reid has worked directly with:
- Executives
- Operations leaders
- Sales teams
- Finance and reporting stakeholders
He understands not just how systems are built, but how they are used, audited, transferred, and evaluated during exit events.
Learning the Cost of Being the Only One
Throughout his career, Reid has repeatedly found himself in the role of sole developer and system owner for mission-critical business platforms.
In those situations:
- He was the only person who fully understood how the system worked
- The business depended on his availability for stability and growth
- Any illness, burnout, or unexpected absence would have placed the company at serious risk
Fortunately, nothing catastrophic ever happened.
But that experience made one thing very clear:
Relying on a single developer is not a strategy — it is a vulnerability.
Reid has lived on both sides of that reality — as the developer carrying the pressure, and as a partner to business leaders who needed stability they could not fully see or control.
That perspective is what shaped Backstop Engineering.
The Insight That Led to Backstop Engineering
Across years of consulting and long-term system stewardship, a consistent pattern emerged:
- Businesses increasingly rely on highly customized software
- That software is often maintained by one deeply knowledgeable developer
- When that developer leaves, burns out, or becomes unavailable, the business is exposed
Today, with AI tools accelerating solo development, this pattern is becoming more common — not less.
Backstop Engineering was created to provide a structured, professional solution to that risk.
Not emergency consulting.
Not last-minute rescue projects.
But Proactive continuity and assurance..
